The Board of the Breese Public Library is seeking an exceptional candidate to fill the position of Library Director. The successful candidate will provide leadership and serve as the library’s primary public representative. The Library Director is expected to represent the Library within the community, develop programs, develop collections, provide budgeting information, and manage the staff and library facilities. Proven experience in working with a Board of Directors, staff, patrons and community organizations, as well as knowledge and experience in library organization and procedure are critical.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college of university and/or Library Technical Assistant

    certificate and work experience in a library preferred

  • Excellent financial, managerial, planning and analytical skills with an understanding of library law

  • Ability to handle critical incidents and resolve conflicts involving customers, staff, materials and facilities

  • Initiative, awareness and vision in developing library services and skills in building and maintaining effective relationships with the Library Board, staff and community

  • Excellent communications skills: internet, integrated library systems (Polaris or similar), MS Office or similar programs and social and electronic media and maintenance of the library website


  • Understand and explain financial documents and requirements

  • Ensure high levels of patron services and public relations

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders,

    groups, and other library leaders of Illinois Heartland Library System and the State

  • Prepare financial and statistical reports for the Board of Directors and the State

  • Direct and control the expenditure of funds within constraints of approved budgets for

    collections, development, equipment, furnishings, and other library needs

  • Supervise employees

  • Lead the library and staff in a highly professional manner, fostering teamwork and collaboration

  • Exhibit strong leadership with the ability to inspire staff, board and community

  • Prepare all reports, agendas and budgets for the Library Board

  • Maintain all policy and procedure manuals

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary is competitive and negotiable based on qualifications. This position is covered by the Illinois Municipal Employee’s Retirement Fund (IMRF). Insurance package, vacation, sick leave and paid holidays are also included and commensurate with those of other city employees.

The Breese Public Library is funded by city taxes and supplemented by state funds therefore new hires must meet city residency requirements.
